ジャズ喫茶とは…

レコードでジャズを聴きながら、お茶をしたり軽食を摂ったりする場所。

今も残るジャズ喫茶に対する世間一般のイメージは「古めかしい」「入りにくい」「怖そう」といったところだろうか。

しかし、実際はどんな地域にもある喫茶店に入り、注文をして、レコードの音を楽しみながら飲み物を飲む、飲み終わったら勘定をすませる。

それが、ジャズ喫茶の今である。

確かに、日本へのジャズ流入とブームに乗ったジャズ喫茶の隆盛期50年代〜70年代には「私語禁止」「頑固なマスター」は名物だったようだが、

時代の変遷とともに「ジャズ」「レコード」「喫茶」文化が残ったと云えるのかも知れない。

また、ジャズ喫茶という形態自体が日本独自の発展を遂げた「カルチャー」であり、他の国では類を見ない。

特に、ここ京都では隆盛期には40軒近くのジャズ喫茶が軒を連ね、学生や若者の遊び場であり、当時の日本のカルチャー発信の場でもあった。

But now, it is not much different from the ordinary coffee shops everywhere.

You just drop into the cafe, have a drink, enjoy Jazz music and make a payment.

That’s the Jazz cafe in this age.

Surely, in the 50’s – 70’s, Jazz flowed into and flourished in Japan, Jazz cafes were known for stubborn owners and talking was prohibited.

So we could say “Jazz”, “records” and “cafe” cultures have only remained with the times.

Also, the form of Jazz cafe has been uniquely developed in Japan, which you probably can’t find in any other countries.

Especially, here in Kyoto, nearly 40 Jazz cafes existed in the period of prosperity.

They were hangouts of students, and centers of Japanese youth culture of those days.
